Welcome to Burgh’s
Curriculum for Excellence page!
Scotland is currently pursuing its biggest education reform for a generation. At its heart, Curriculum for Excellence is the programme of work that is reviewing the current curriculum. It aims to provide:
·
more freedom for teachers·
greater choice and opportunity for pupils·
a single coherent curriculum for all children and young people aged 3-18.Curriculum for Excellence challenges us to think differently about the curriculum. It encourages those working in education to plan and act in new ways. It also poses challenges for learning and teaching.
"It’s going to be hard work, but nothing that is worthwhile is ever easy!"
The purpose of the programme is to improve the learning, attainment and achievement of children and young people in Scotland. It is also about ensuring that pupils achieve on a broad front, not just in terms of examinations. It is important to ensure that children and young people are acquiring the full range of skills and abilities relevant to growing, living and working in the contemporary world. Curriculum for Excellence aims to ensure that they will enjoy greater choice and opportunity to help realise their individual talents.
"At Burgh we are embracing the Principles of ACfE"
The implementation of Curriculum for Excellence will go beyond the provision of guidance on curriculum content. It will have implications for:
·
the teaching profession and other staff·
the organisation of the curriculum in our schools and centres·
the qualifications system·
the recognition of wider achievement·
the improvement framework. The work of the programme is being taken forward within a strong partnership between the Scottish Government, Learning and Teaching Scotland, Scottish Qualifications Authority and HM Inspectorate of Education.
Wisdom, justice, compassion
and integrity are the words inscribed on the mace of the Scottish Parliament. These words have helped to define values for Scottish society and ….. "we want them to define our values at Burgh!"The Curriculum Review Group says: 'One of the prime purposes of education is to make our young people aware of the values on which Scottish society is based and so help them to establish their own stances on matters of social justice and personal and collective responsibility. Young people therefore need to learn about and develop these values. The curriculum is an important means through which this personal development should be encouraged.'
Curriculum for Excellence aims to:
·
focus classroom practice upon the child and around the four capacities of education:·
simplify and prioritise the current curriculum·
encourage more learning through experiences·
create a single framework for the curriculum and assessment 3-18.The intention is to alter the balance between a process that is heavily dependent on content, and learning and teaching approaches that improve pupils’ understanding of what is being taught. This is not a one-off change but the start of a continuous process of review to ensure that the curriculum remains up to date.
"The old 5-14, Standard and Higher grades are changing and we’ll need to get used to new terminology . . ."

As young people move towards the end of their time in school and the transition to further or higher education or the workplace, new ways of recognising young people’s achievements are planned. There is a lot of work to be done on the shape of recognition, but it is acknowledged that there will need to be a broad range of meaningful achievements related to the purposes of the curriculum.
"It is a very exciting time within Scottish Education and nowhere is the commitment to Excellence stronger than at Burgh Primary. We will strive to celebrate pupil achievement both in and out of school as well as give opportunities for pupils to reach their individual potentials through their own learning styles."
